Make Scale Models of The Planets

Purpose
To show how the planets compare in size.

Overview
Students make two-dimensional models of each planet by cutting out different-sized paper circles according to a chart that shows the planets' actual and scaled diameters.

Key Concepts

  • The planets are much smaller than the sun.
  • The inner planets are much smaller than the outer planets, with the exception of Pluto.

Materials
Paper, rulers, compasses or circle templates, "Size of Planet" chart, newspaper, tape or glue.
