This images shows a hilly, layered martian landscape, with the car-sized Mars Science Laboratory rover reaching out with its robotic arm to study rocks. The rover's mast, or 'neck,' is off-center, rising from the right-hand corner of the rover's square 'body.' Its rectangular head-like box has a camera that resembles a single eye, gazing down on the bedrock below. Large rover tracks extend far into the distance.
