Astronomers using the 200-inch telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California took these two images of Mars around 1956. They took the image on the left hand side through a blue filter, which allowed them to see the atmosphere and the clouds circling the planet. They took the image on the right through a red filter, which allowed them to see details of the planet, such as the dark area and polar ice caps.
