How researchers will use NASA's Curiosity Mars rover to read environmental history recorded in rock layers is the topic of a two-day science newswriters' workshop led by the mission's project scientist, John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. The workshop participants visited sedimentary rock exposures in California's Mojave Desert on Monday, April 30, 2012.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft, carrying Curiosity, was launched Nov. 26, 2011, for an August 2012 landing next to Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater on Mars.
