NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter arrived at Mars on the underbelly of Perseverance on Feb. 18, 2021.

In the more than two years since landing, the helicopter has greatly exceeded its planned lifespan and evolved from a test of the first powered, controlled flight on another world to working to support other goals. Ingenuity has taught engineers about operating a new type of flight vehicle in the Mars atmosphere, and has taken stunning aerial images that have helped scout the Mars surface as never before.

Here are some of the highlights of the mission:

  • Ingenuity was the 1st helicopter on another planet
  • Ingenuity has completed 72 flights
  • Ingenuity has flown 11 miles
  • Ingenuity has spent 128+ minutes in flight
  • Ingenuity spent just under 3 years active on Mars
  • Ingenuity reached a highest altitude of 79 feet
  • Ingenuity assisted the Perseverance rover by scouting out the rocky Mars terrain ahead

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter.
