What advice can you offer to young scientists or engineers?

Learn good habits. Good engineering practices, especially in software engineering, may be tedious to learn, but are invaluable when they become second nature.

What are your dreams for the future of exploration?

My dream is that the first interstellar mission will be launched in my lifetime. When I was born, we only knew of one star with planets, and it's hard to do science with one data point. Now we know of many and will want to visit them someday. Interstellar travel could be possible with a laser or microwave sail craft. This will be an exciting frontier in the third millenium.

What portion of this mission interests you the most?

This will be the first time that we drill into rocks on Mars exposing more than their dusty exterior.
