Mars is our planetary neighbor and the most "earthlike" planet in our solar system. Mars has been, and will continue to be, a focus of international space exploration and is one of the most likely destinations for future human habitation. The harsh environment on Mars and the absence of any human existence there inspires students to think about every possible element that is essential for human survival, from how to get breathable air and potable water to how to be happy and productive in one's environment, in partnership with others.
While students design an imagined community on Mars, they are really learning how to build community here on Earth, to explore career fields that prepare them for their own futures, to understand environmental and social conditions necessary for living well, and how to express their ideas in a compelling, engaging way.
