4) Thermal Vac Test (copyright also: LMA): Traveling
through the vacuum of space for months at a time can take a toll
on a spacecraft. The 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft must go
through a series of tests at Lockheed Martin Astronautics in Denver
before being flown to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for
launch. Thermal vacuum tests simulate space conditions to ensure
that the spacecraft can withstand the intensely cold temperatures
and harsh radiation conditions of space. |
