9) GRS/Mapping Hydrogen (copyright also: Los Alamos):
Hydrogen is one of the most important chemical elements GRS will
measure. Detecting hydrogen in the shallow subsurface of Mars
would send a signal to scientists that water ice probably exists
below ground. That would be an exciting discovery, because
water is one of the fundamental requirements for life as we know
it. It would help us understand whether conditions were ever
right for primitive, microbial life forms to exist on Mars in the distant
past, as well as indicate what water resources might be available
to future human explorers. GRS will supply data similar to that of
the successful Lunar Prospector mission, which told us how much
hydrogen-and thus water-is likely on the moon. |
